East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. A cool climate region, planted on the rolling green hills some 50 metres above sea level, strongly maritime influenced by the Bass Coast near Bairnsdale and Gippsland Lakes in the most southerly region of Victoria.

Vineyard: Calulu Vineyard. East Gippsland, near Bairnsdale and Gippsland Lakes. Soil type: Red, silty clay loam over limestone subsoil.

Notes: The 2018 Pinot Noir underwent whole bunch fermentation and is a shiny, black cherry colour. Sanguine and salty liquorice notes, with white pepper and five spice melds with black cherry and blood plum on the complex nose. These elements combine with crisp redcurrant, pine forest floor, foraged wild mushrooms, earthy rhubarb, kalamata olive and blackberry bramble, with fine but grippy tannins and excellent length.

Food matches: Cantonese roast duck, pâtés and terrines, porcini mushroom risotto. Label: Chestnut Teal Duck.
